Pressure dependence of viscosity, or is the earth's mantle a glass?

چکیده

Little is known about the real conditions in the earth’s interior because direct sampling is not feasible. The propagation of seismic waves is the only instrument for investigating the mantle. Therefore, viscosity η is of prime importance. Experimental data indicate that mantle viscosity is about 1022 Pa s. At such a high viscosity even molten materials behave like solids. The aim of the present paper is to demonstrate that, due to the extreme pressure, viscosity increases sharply. In this way the glass transition temperature increases faster than the melting point, so an important part of the mantle could be in a glassy state, although being molten. Pressure and temperature dependence of viscosity of glassforming and of geoscientifically relevant systems

The paper discusses a model of viscosity η of glassforming melts in an attempt to predict the dependence of η on temperature T and on pressure P. The equation, derived here, describes with excellent accuracy all existing experimental viscosity data including those of glassforming melts, igneous materials and polymers. It is demonstrated that the activation energy E(Tg) can be expressed through ...

Viscosity jump in Earth's mid-mantle.

The viscosity structure of Earth's deep mantle affects the thermal evolution of Earth, the ascent of mantle plumes, settling of subducted oceanic lithosphere, and the mixing of compositional heterogeneities in the mantle. Based on a reanalysis of the long-wavelength nonhydrostatic geoid, we infer viscous layering of the mantle using a method that allows us to avoid a priori assumptions about it...

The Effect of Depth-dependent Viscosity on Convective Mixing in the Mantle and the Possible Survival of Primitive Mantle

The effect depth-dependent viscosity has on convective mixing and sampling (or degassing) of primitive mantle beneath ridges is explored in two-dimensional models. Higher relative viscosities in the deep mantle decrease convection velocities and strain rates and prolong the residence time of material in the deep mantle. If the average viscosity of the lower mantle is at least 100 times the visc...

Pressure effects on Ca60Al40 metallic glass superconductors

Theoretical computation of the pressure dependence superconducting state parameters of binary Ca60Al40 is reported using model potential formalism. Explicit expressions have been derived for the volume dependence of the electron–phonon coupling strength λ and the Coulomb pseudopotential μ* considering the variation of Fermi momentum KF and Debye temperature ӨD with volume. Well known Ashcroft’s...

Some recent advances in understanding the mineralogy of Earth's deep mantle.

Understanding planetary structure and evolution requires a detailed knowledge of the properties of geological materials under the conditions of deep planetary interiors. Experiments under the extreme pressure-temperature conditions of the deep mantle are challenging, and many fundamental properties remain poorly constrained or are inferred only through uncertain extrapolations from lower pressu...
